The transition to a climate-neutral energy system by 2050 is in full swing. In the coming years, increasing use will be made of sustainable energy sources such as sun, wind and heat. This requires the expansion and adaptation of the energy infrastructure. All of this has consequences for spatial integration and social involvement.

Social assessment framework towards a climate-neutral energy system

Various parties are working together to realise the energy system of the future, including governments at various levels, energy companies, grid managers, social organisations and, increasingly, citizens. The report ‘Steering for broad prosperity and justice: towards an assessment framework for choices aimed at a climate-neutral energy system in 2050’ presents a social assessment framework that helps these parties to make assessments for the energy system of the future. It offers starting points for how public interests and values can be weighed, within which parameters this can be done, and how choices can be made with broad prosperity and justice as guiding principles.

Presentation of the report

We would like to invite you to an IMR Academy Event on Thursday 26 June 2025 from 15.30 to 17.00 hours, during which this report will be presented. Saskia Lavrijssen, dean of Nijmegen School of Management, contributed to the report in collaboration with three researchers from Tilburg University. During the event, co-authors Martijn Groenleer and Wessel Ganzevoort (Tilburg University) will present the report, after which they will discuss it with Saskia Lavrijssen. Saskia: ‘The framework helps to accelerate strategy and decision-making regarding the transition to a climate-neutral energy system. It, therefore, fits in seamlessly with our faculty's mission ’Responsible Governance for Sustainable Societies'.’
