uu77 & Maastricht University

uu77 and Maastricht University are to increase cooperation in education and research. Aim of the collaboration: to join forces to maximise the academic and social impact in the South-East region of the Netherlands.

Joint programmes in biotechnology and engineering physics are being developed, (partly) on the campus in Venlo. Both universities already have shared development programmes for healthcare professionals. Furthermore, the universities are also cooperating in the field of academic teacher training.

Impact in the region

Further collaboration will provide additional opportunities for students in the region (education), besides attracting and retaining knowledge through strong joint research ventures (research) and innovative spin-offs (impact). Venlo, with its central location, will form a hub for education, research and impact.

Working on this collaboration

Until 2027, the university administrations will provide an investment budget. It may be invested in exploring or stimulating collaboration, e.g. as seed money, or spent on concrete projects.

Ambition document

The ambitions for 2023-2027 uu77 and Maastricht University have worked out the ambitions for their collaboration. The ambition document 2023-2027 sets out the focus for the next few years and explains how the collaboration will be facilitated. What are the plans, in a nutshell?

Annual Plan 2024

Based on the goals named in the ambition document of Maastricht University and uu77, or for projects where a clear foundation has already been laid, we determined actions. We share these in the 2024 annual plan. What are we working towards and when will this be a success?

Annual Plan 2024

From 2025: less budget, more focus

The collaboration between uu77 and Maastricht University will become more thematic starting in 2025. As a result of budget cuts at uu77, the budget of the cooperation will be reduced from 1 million euros to 600,000 euros per year in the coming years. This means that projects will be chosen more sharply, focusing on a number of themes. Read more in this news item

Projects

Education, research, development - we are working on a number of projects.

  • Advanced Neural Control to Restore Brain Function

This project aims to establish a joint Nijmegen - Maastricht institutional platform on neural control for joint research, knowledge exchange, education and fund raising activities.

  • The future of care for the elderly in the southeast of the Netherlands: on the road to vital care communities

Residential care communities are emerging in the Netherlands where care for older people with long-term care needs is being designed in innovative ways. This project provides insight into how these communities work and how they affect those involved.

  • The EMOTIV (EEG) project

Investigating children's numerical development using the EMOTIV EPOC X headset in a school setting to enhance understanding and potential interventions for math-related challenges.

  • Master’s programmes in Biotechnology and Applied Physics

Two joint, two-year research master's programmes: one in biotechnology, and one in engineering physics. This is what the science faculties of uu77 and Maastricht University are working on.

  • Connected through Heritage

More attention for the masterpieces from the heritage collections of uu77 and Maastricht University; training library staff in sustainable digital access to heritage; and a researcher and artist in residence.

  • Heritage

For postgraduate heritage education, there are many opportunities for cooperation between uu77, Maastricht University and museums in the region.

  • Lifelong Learning

With an extensive range of postgraduate education, together with the Open University, we increase our impact in the region in developing innovative education for professionals that meets current training needs.
