Scientific Equipment Department

General Instrumentation is a facility of the Faculty of Science. Staff members of it deal with the maintenance and operation of research equipment, methods of analysis and supervision over the planning and use of the equipment.

About General Instrumentation

The tasks of GI staff include maintaining and operating the equipment, developing analysis methods, instructing users on measurement methods and practices, and interpreting results. GI staff members also supervise the planning and use of the equipment.

Support

The facility is available to all research departments (staff and students) of the Faculty of Science. Users of the GI can count on intensive and personal guidance and a willingness to find tailor-made solutions. Analyses are sometimes carried out by GI staff, and in other cases by the users themselves after receiving instructions. The GI also offers support in education. External groups may also use the facility under certain conditions (please contact the staff for further information).

Who are we?

The GI's equipment is managed by four specialised staff members with a technical-scientific background: Hetty Manenschijn, Paul van der Ven, Jelle Postma and Sebastian Krosse. Stef Olsthoorn has been coordinator of the GI and the GI committee since 2011. In this committee, which includes members from the IMM, RIBES and DCN institutes, the GI advises on new investments.

Electromicroscopy

Electron microscopy (EM) is a powerful technique that allows the internal structure or surface morphology of materials and biological objects to be studied. EM can reveal details measuring just a few nanometres. The GI houses two transmission electron microscopes (TEM) and all standard EM auxiliary equipment.

Light microscopy

General Instrumentation has a number of confocal and widefield microscopes, a light sheet microscope and a stereomicroscope. We manage and maintain these systems, assist users in setting up and optimising applications, and provide training for researchers/students affiliated with FNWI research groups and, on request, for external parties.

Medical research equipment

In addition to microscopy and elemental analysis, the General Instrumentation offers techniques in the field of ultracentrifugation and multiwell measurements, among other things. Various educational modules are also available.
