Why study this programme?

Learn about the problems of global cooperation, competition, and conflict: how can we achieve international security and lasting peace? How can we understand and evaluate moral dilemmas in war? How can we explain changes in power and challenges to order in a multipolar world? What is the role of international organisations, NGOs, or individuals in the governing of global affairs?

Master's specialisation in International Relations

  • Engage with Real-World Issues: Explore the pressing global and regional challenges of the 21st century, from globalisation and digitisation to the rise of the Global South and non-state actors. Learn to navigate the complexities of today’s rapidly changing political landscape. Understand how political decisions are made concerning international conflict and cooperation, global trade and finance, development and climate change, or global justice, human rights, and development.
  • Analyse Through Theory and Practice: Look beyond the daily news and learn to disentangle deeper global structures and different aspects of power that underlie the causes and outcomes of global conflicts. Dive deep into critical topics like diplomacy, inequalities, and the contestation of norms. Examine (the varying effects of) power dynamics across regions through cutting-edge theories and methodologies.
  • Discover the Power of Ideas and Norms: Understand how political choices are made, legitimised, and contested. Investigate the role of persuasion, norms, and identity in configuring international politics. And learn to formulate suitable solutions to the most pressing issues of today and tomorrow.
  • Profit from Excellence: Our teaching staff are renowned scholars in their fields. Our programme has received excellent evaluations (Keuzegids Master's 2024). A panel of international experts has concluded that we are rightly proud of our community spirit, which benefits the programme’s quality as well as our graduates’ careers (source: Academion, 2023). Students are empowered to take a leading role in their own learning, and prepared for successful careers in the public and private sectors. Our very active students’ association, ismus, regularly organises formal and informal activities. You have dual degree options with American University (Washington, DC), the University of Bamberg (Germany), and the University of Glasgow (UK).
