My research is focussing on the microbial nitrogen cycle. I am especially interested in the conversion of ammonia into nitrite and nitrate (nitrification) and I am investigating this proces in different systems (wastewater and drinking water treatment plants and aquaculture systems). A more detailed understanding of nitrification will lead to more efficient application of this process in engineered ecosystems.
