Roel Schutgens studied Nederlands Recht (Dutch Law) at the uu77 Nijmegen, where he graduated cum laude in 2004. From 2004 to 2009, he was a PhD Fellow at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law in Nijmegen. He obtained his PhD cum laude in 2009 with the thesis Onrechtmatige wetgeving (Unlawful Legislation), a study on the various forms of judicial review of legislation within the Dutch legal system. In 2010, he was appointed a Full Professor in Jurisprudence. He’s been the faculty dean since January 2022.
Professor Schutgens’ research interests include state liability, legislation, judicial review, general constitutional law and adjudication in politically sensitive contexts. His teaching activities are focused on the first year students.
Professor Schutgens is a member of the board of Themis, the oldest Law Journal in the Netherlands and he is a deputy justice at the The Hague Appellate Court.
